I recently had the pleasure of meeting up at Dos Vatos in Neptune Beach with some of the best food bloggers in Jax. The reason? To eat at and give light to this amazing Mexican inspired restaurant. Forget Taco Tuesday, It’s tacos everyday at Dos Vatos. From the crafted cocktails, to the wild and crazy flavor combos. This innovative taco joint is one for the books and a must try. For more about this cool spot keep reading.

Dos Vatos Tacos. The Run Down
Dos Vatos Tacos is located in Neptune Beach at 1451 Atlantic Blvd. They serve up out of the ordinary tacos and hand crafted signature cocktails. This is straight up and down a taco joint. Of course you can get sides like chips and queso. But the name holds true when it mentions tacos. They currently offer 20 tacos plus 2 rotating specials weekly.

It’s owned and operated by Chef Derek Schroyer. He takes his culinary craft and tacos very serious. Upon first bite, the burst of flavors let me know he isn’t a rookie when it comes to cooking and his tacos ain’t regular.
The vibe of Dos Vatos is a typical bar, with a vintage like setting complete with vintage arcade games and crazy art work for sale all over. The decor is quirky and funny but way cool. Upon walking in you’re truly not expecting what your mouth is to receive.
Everything I Tried
Chef Derek rolled out the red carpet and sent out his finest specialty creations such as the chicken tinga tacos, KFC ‘Korean fried chicken wings’, and a special concoction he created and is still testing ‘fried margarita’ a fried delight served with sour candy, and lime ice cream. I tried an array of drinks including the sangria and the midsummer mule made with spicy ginger and black berry. Both light, delicious, and refreshing.

I ordered the week’s special which was The Trio. 3 mini tacos which included the Bang bang shrimp, Korean short rib, and Black Magic Brisket tacos. Mind absolutely blown. The flavor pallet in each taco was simply unreal. You can tell these tacos are crafted with care and years of culinary knowledge. Derek is a surgeon when it comes to pairing flavors with protein into one bite. Period.
For example the Magic Brisket is seasoned and aged for 2 days, giving you the ultimate most tender cut of beef you could imagine.
My second choice of taco was the Bernie’s Limp Brisket. I went with the sweet variation. Guys, it was wild how tender and flavorful the beef was on this taco! My mouth is watering right now at the thought of it.
Needless to say I had zero quarrels about my entrees here.
Wrapping Things Up: Dos Vatos Tacos
Dos Vatos Tacos is a taco lover’s dream. I’ve had some tasty tacos around town. However, the tacos here take the cake and are memorable. With specialties such as Nashville Hot Chicken, Quesa Birria, and Blackened Mahi, Dos Vatos has the taco game on lock.
One last note to keep in mind. The specialty tacos are served as is, if you’re a picky eater this is NOT the place for you. Chef Derek says the reason why he doesn’t allow substitutions is because to appreciate the culinary skill and flavor it just has to be made as is.
Every week on Thursday 2 new specials are rolled out, they offer vegan options, and the chicken tinga tacos go for $1 on Sundays to all service workers. Be sure that you stop by for a crafted cocktail and taco asap. Let me know how it was when you do.
