Every city has that one restaurant people swear by. The one that’s always packed, always on someone’s story, and somehow always in the middle of a conversation about “where to eat.” For us, that spot is Gemma Fish + Oyster—a fish and oyster bar that had me side-eyeing after my first visit. It wasn’t terrible, but it also wasn’t giving what the girls said it was giving. And you know me, I don’t love dragging a place unless it’s truly tragic. So here I am again, because sometimes restaurants are still finding their footing, sometimes the vibe hits different on a second try, and sometimes the food just deserves a redemption round. The real question is—did Gemma finally serve or is it still all talk?
Inside Gemma Fish + Oyster
Stepping inside Gemma is an experience all on its own. The space is absolutely gorgeous, pulling you in with modern-day, plush, 1950s upscale décor that feels chic yet inviting. The main wall stops you in your tracks with a striking mural of a woman surrounded by golden butterflies floating from her hair, setting the tone for the rest of the room.

The true centerpiece, though, is the bar—decked out with gold trim, rich fabric barstools, and a glow that feels like permanent golden hour. Sitting right at the corner of Atlantic and Hendricks in San Marco’s newest shopping buildout, Gemma’s big windows spill light across the space while offering full views of the neighborhood’s corner. It’s damn near too cute and quaint to resist. There’s even a rooftop bar—though during my visit it was reserved for a private event. From the bold black-and-white tile work to the emerald green velvet, every detail whispers intention. If you’re craving a mid-level fine dining experience wrapped in style, this is definitely the vibe.
Girl’s Girl Service
Let’s start with the service because it honestly set the tone for the night. Our server Sarah was such a girls’ girl—knowledgeable about the menu, giving her honest opinions on apps and entrées, and making sure everything hit the table quick and fresh. Zero complaints here. We even had a manager swing by to check in, which gave the evening that extra layer of attentiveness.
Mocktails > Cocktails
As for drinks, I was pleasantly surprised to see Gemma carries a dry bar. As more of a mocktail gworl these days, I love when a spot makes space for non-drinkers with options that feel intentional. Naturally, I went for the “Phony Negroni,” a mix of botanicals, Tuscan juniper, Southern Italian citrus, and florals. The presentation was stunning—a bold fuchsia poured from its own pre-made bottle into a glass dressed with an orange slice. Sadly, the taste was a hard no. Bitter, unpleasant, and immediately sent back. Sarah handled it with total grace and swapped it out for the “Spicy Mockarita,” a fresher blend of agave, lime, orange, tonic, and a tajin rim. Definitely more drinkable, but still not hitting that wow factor. My takeaway? The effort is appreciated, but Gemma’s mocktails could use a little more oomph.

Appetizer + Main Course
Now onto the star of the show—the food. Since my date isn’t into oysters and I wasn’t in the mood, we skipped the obvious and went with the Baked Crab & Artichoke Dip to start. Portion-wise, it was generous and hit all the creamy, flavorful notes you’d expect from a classic dip. My only critique? It could’ve used a little more crab. The real magic was tucked around the edges where the cheese crisped up—those bites held the richest flavor and the most crab. Served with toast-like chips, it was a solid opener that set the tone.

But the main entrée? Absolutely no questions there. The snapper was next-level delicious. Served over fresh jasmine rice with root vegetables (white and orange carrots) and green beans, all swimming in one of the most luscious red curry sauces I’ve had in a minute. The fish was filleted delicately, cooked perfectly, and every bite was a dream—minus the skin, which I always leave behind.

This dish alone was enough to redeem Gemma in my book. Filling, flavorful, and beautifully balanced, it was the kind of plate that makes you pause mid-bite and just say, “Gosh. This is amazing.” Needless to say, dessert was skipped—we were stuffed and satisfied
Some Things Are Just Better The Second Time
So, did Gemma Fish + Oyster finally serve or was it all talk? Honestly, this second visit gave the restaurant a chance to redeem itself. While the mocktails could use more punch and the crab dip left me searching for a little extra seafood, the snapper alone proved that Gemma has the range to deliver a truly memorable dish. Pair that with a gorgeous interior, attentive service, and the kind of atmosphere that feels perfect for date night or catching up with friends, and I can see why the buzz around this spot stays loud. It may not have been love at first bite, but this time around, Gemma showed me enough to keep it on my list—and maybe even tempt me back for round three.
