Boot shopping can get overwhelming REAL quick, especially when every other scroll is telling you there’s another style you absolutely need in your closet. But here’s the thing, you don’t need every boot trending this season to build a wardrobe that works for you. Instead of focusing on specific styles, let’s simplify the list by 5 solely focusing on color and type.

Now, before we get into it, understand that this is not a list of boots you have to buy because I said so. Absolutely not! Personal style is just that, PERSONAL. Whether you prefer a pointed toe, a chunky heel, a knee-high boot, or something flat and practical, the idea is to choose a style within each color category that makes sense for your wardrobe, your lifestyle, and most importantly, YOU.
I’ll be sharing my personal picks along with an outfit for each to give you a little styling inspiration. But the goal isn’t to recreate my closet. It’s to help you make more intentional choices when building yours. Because the best wardrobe isn’t the one with the most options. It’s the one filled with pieces you actually love wearing.

Boot Shopping, Let’s Get Into.
Now that we’ve established that there are no hard and fast rules here, let’s get into the boots!
For this little boot shopping guide, I’m breaking things down into five color categories: black, brown, nude, animal, and statement boots. I’ll be showing you five pairs from my own closet and how I styled each one, but remember, these are examples, not requirements.
And don’t get caught up on finding the exact shade or spending a certain amount of money. Whether your perfect brown is chocolate, cognac, or somewhere in between, or your boots come from a designer boutique, Amazon, or TikTok Shop, what matters is that they work for your personal style and budget.
Oh, and one more thing before we start. I’ve recently discovered something that has completely changed my boot shopping experience, especially as someone with wider feet: sizing up!
I’ve started going a full size up in certain boots, and GWORL, what a difference! There’s room for a comfortable sock, my toes aren’t fighting for their lives, and contrary to what I used to believe, my feet don’t look like boats. I’ve been walking around with my toes cramped for entirely too long!
Now, this isn’t a universal sizing rule. Every boot fits differently, and going up a full size won’t work for every foot or style. But if you’ve been struggling with narrow-fitting boots, try experimenting with a little extra room. Just make sure your heel isn’t slipping and your foot feels supported.
Okay, NOW let’s talk boots!
1. Black: Your Foolproof Starting Point
Anytime I’m building my wardrobe around a major accessory that comes in a range of colors, I almost always start with black. Whether you’re shopping for an ankle bootie, a calf-high boot, or a thigh-high moment, black is a solid starting point because it’s easy to incorporate into a variety of outfits. Of course, that doesn’t mean black is your only option! It simply gives you a versatile foundation to build from.
For my pick, I went with the Tabi Toe Bootie from Steve Madden, and chile, let me tell you how we got here. I’ve been a HUGE fan of Maison Margiela’s iconic Tabi shoes for the longest, and in a past life, I ordered the $1,000 pair, only to discover that they ran too narrow for my feet.

Caro Black Leather $169.95
Between the struggle to get them on and the hassle of trying to figure out sizing through an order-and-return situation with Neiman Marcus, I decided to let that dream rest. Enter Steve Madden with his version for a fraction of the price at $170. Made with genuine leather, these booties feature a convenient side zipper, fit my feet like a glove, and are oh-so-comfortable. Listen, I know Steve has caught some heat over the years for his designer-inspired designs, but in this particular instance? He was heaven-sent!
How I Styled Them
For this look, I wanted to show how a simple black boot can serve as the foundation for an outfit that has a little more personality. I started with a pair of zebra print barrel jeans and paired them with a black bodysuit featuring a sexy strappy back detail. To finish things off, I added a leather jacket and an oversized furry bag because clearly, we weren’t going for subtle today.

What I love about this combination is how the black pieces help ground the zebra print without taking away from it. Between the interesting shape of the jeans, the split-toe detail of the boots, and the texture of the bag, there’s a lot going on, but it all works together. It’s a great reminder that your basics don’t have to result in basic outfits. Sometimes they’re exactly what allows the more interesting pieces in your closet to shine.

2. Brown: The Ultimate Fall Neutral
If black is my first stop when building a boot collection, brown is coming in at a VERY close second. There’s something about a good brown boot that just screams FALL! It’s warm, rich, and incredibly versatile, especially when you start incorporating those beautiful autumn colors into your wardrobe. Think denim, cream, olive green, burgundy, and even black. Brown has a way of softening an outfit while still making it feel polished and intentional. And don’t get caught up on finding the perfect shade. Whether you’re into deep chocolate, cognac, or something in between, choose a brown that complements the colors you already love wearing.
For my pick, I’m going with the Jeffrey Campbell Visionary Boot, and GWORL, these were worth the wait! I actually snagged mine last year after missing out on them the year before.

Visionary Booties $185.00
So when I saw this particular style AND color go live, I swooped onto that website like a hawk and checked out before anybody could change my mind. What really sold me were the indentations around the toe area. It’s such an unexpected detail that gives an otherwise classic brown boot a little edge. Definitely a conversation starter without doing too much.
And lucky for you, as of October 2026, they’re fully restocked ( on SOME sites) and ready for you to get your hands on a pair if they speak to your personal style. But remember, the goal isn’t to buy MY boots. It’s to find a brown boot that makes sense for YOUR closet.
How I Styled Them
For this look, I wanted to play around with a little juxtaposition, mixing unexpected pieces and experimenting with layers. I started with a multicolored cropped flannel top with studded detailing from Muse Brand and brought back those oversized jorts from my previous styling article. Because yes, we’re wearing our clothes more than once around here!
But instead of stopping there, I decided to have a little fun with the proportions by layering a khaki tennis skirt over the jorts. It’s an unexpected combination that adds dimension to the outfit while giving it a slightly playful, deconstructed feel. To bring everything together, I paired my Jeffrey Campbell Visionary boots with an older oversized brown hobo bag that has a similar glossy finish. I love how the two complement each other without being overly matchy-matchy. A brown baseball cap was the finishing touch.

What I love most about this outfit is that it doesn’t rely on buying an entirely new wardrobe to create something interesting. We’re mixing textures, playing with silhouettes, and giving pieces we already own a completely different look. And THAT is where personal style really starts to develop. Sometimes it’s not about what else you need to buy, but what else you can do with what you already have.

3. Nude: For the Neutral-Loving Girlie
Now, if you’re the girlie who gravitates toward creams, beiges, and lighter neutrals instead of the traditional darker colors of fall, you’re going to want to consider adding a nude boot to your collection. Think of this as another variation of brown, just a little softer. These lighter shades are gorgeous for creating those tonal, monochromatic looks we love during the cooler months. They pair beautifully with everything from ivory knits and cream trousers to light-wash denim and even darker pieces when you want a little contrast. And depending on the shade you choose, they can easily transition into your spring wardrobe, giving you even more opportunities to wear them.
And remember, nude isn’t one universal shade. It can be anything from a soft beige to a rich caramel or deeper brown, depending on your skin tone and personal preference. The idea is to find a shade that complements YOUR wardrobe, not somebody else’s definition of nude.
For my pick, we’re taking a little trip to Amazon, where I found these beauties for just $60! And listen, these are definitely not for the fashionably faint of heart. LOL! Between the unusually shaped square toe and the rounded chunky heel, these boots have a personality all their own. They’re a little unconventional, a little funky, and exactly the kind of unexpected detail I love incorporating into an outfit. Not only do they make a statement, but they’re also COMFORTABLE! And that’s a combination I’ll happily take any day.

Chunky Square Toe Boots $59.00
So whether you prefer something sleek and minimal or a boot with a little more character, don’t overlook nude boots when boot shopping. Sometimes a softer neutral is exactly what your fall wardrobe needs.
How I Styled Them
Apparently, we’re holding on to flannels this fall, and quite frankly, AS WE SHOULD! For this look, I started with a thrifted men’s flannel button-down and paired it with a heavy-knit flared mini skirt. I love mixing masculine and feminine pieces, and this combination gave me the cutest little tomboy-chic moment. I went in with my nude knee-high boots, which helped soften the look while adding a little contrast to the heavier textures.
And because we love a good layer around here, I threw on a carpenter-style denim jacket I recently picked up from the KBB by Kahlana collection at Target. To finish things off, I brought back the same brown baseball cap from our previous look (because why not?!) and my trusty wardrobe essential Louis Vuitton Speedy 30. And per usual, I’m carrying her as an oversized underarm clutch because that’s just how I like to do things!

Shirt (similar) || Jacket || Skirt (similar) || Hat || Bag || Boots || Sunglasses (similar)
What I love about this outfit is how easily pieces from different parts of my wardrobe can come together. We’ve got thrifted menswear, a feminine skirt, a structured denim jacket, and a pair of boots that bring it all together. Nothing here was purchased specifically to create this look. It’s simply another example of how playing with proportions, textures, and pieces you already own can give you something entirely different. And that’s the beauty of developing your own personal style.

4. Animal Print: A Little Walk on the Wild Side
Now THIS is where I like to have a little fun when it comes to boot shopping! In my opinion, every fly closet should have at least ONE (or five, who’s counting? LOL!) pair of animal print boots. Leopard, cow, zebra, snakeskin, take your pick! As far as I’m concerned, animal prints are neutrals, and they have a way of giving an outfit that extra POP it might be missing. Whether you’re wearing a simple all-black look, denim and a basic tee, or something a little more elevated, a good animal print boot can do some serious heavy lifting in the style department.
And don’t be afraid to mix your prints either! Animal prints can play surprisingly well with other patterns, especially stripes. The trick is finding a balance between the colors, scale, and proportions so the outfit feels intentional rather than overwhelming. But remember, style is subjective, so if mixing prints isn’t your thing, that’s perfectly fine too!
Now, I actually had to retire one of my FAVORITE pairs of boots this year, a thigh-high snakeskin pair from Vince Camuto. And I’m not going to lie, I’m still a little sad about it. LOL! Those boots had a good run! But I found a worthy replacement from Azalea Wang, and GWORL, I am in LOVE. What I especially appreciate about this pair is the rounded toe and chunky heel, which make them so much more comfortable for walking. Because while I absolutely love a boot that makes a statement, I also love being able to feel my feet at the end of the day!

Evergreen Boot $98.99
So if you’ve been playing it safe with your footwear, consider letting an animal print boot be your little introduction to experimenting with personal style. You might be surprised by just how much you can wear it with.
How I Styled Them
I won’t even lie to you, TikTok Shop has had me in a CHOKEHOLD lately! LOL! For this look, I went with another viral find, a khaki midi skirt from Urban Revivo, and GWORL, the quality is TOP TIER! The construction, the fit, the overall look of it? Literally perfect. But of course, I couldn’t leave well enough alone, so I hiked the skirt up a bit to shorten the length and play around with the proportions.
Instead of reaching for a traditional top, I opted for a cropped denim jacket, letting it do double duty as both my shirt and outerwear. Paired with my Azalea Wang snakeskin knee-high boots, the combination gives us a chic, effortless look with just enough personality. The animal print adds that unexpected little POP without taking away from the simplicity of the outfit.

To finish things off, I added an oversized black kisslock clutch I recently found on Amazon, inspired by the Coach version I’ve been eyeing. It’s such a fun accessory, and the exaggerated size gives the outfit that extra little something without overwhelming it. The end result? A simple but stylish IT GIRL moment, and we didn’t have to do the absolute most to get there!
And that’s another thing I love about animal print boots. You don’t have to build an equally dramatic outfit around them. Sometimes a few well-chosen pieces are all you need to let the boots do their thing.

5. Statement Boots: Where the Fun Begins!
Now THIS is the section of your closet where all your wildest, most irrational fashion boot shopping dreams get to live! We’re talking plaid, fur, slouchy silhouettes, bold colors, unusual textures, and whatever other outrageous pair of boots your little heart desires. This is where you get to have FUN with fashion, experiment, and let your personality do the talking.
But if you noticed, I intentionally saved this category for last, and there’s a reason for that. When you’re building a wardrobe from scratch, I always recommend covering your basics before diving headfirst into statement pieces. Why? Because it’s SO easy to fall in love with a fabulous pair of boots simply because they’re pretty and catch your eye. Next thing you know, you’ve spent your budget on something you have absolutely no idea how to style, and you’re standing in front of your closet saying, “I don’t have anything to wear!” Sound familiar? LOL!
Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m all for an unexpected fashion purchase every now and then. But having a solid foundation of versatile pieces gives you so much more freedom to play with the fun stuff. Once you’ve got your basics covered, GWORL, you’re free to roam!
For my statement pick, I went with those viral TikTok Shop boots you’ve probably seen floating around your feed. You know the ones! A gorgeous burgundy, shiny crocodile-effect finish with a slouchy silhouette that is giving ALL the drama. And let me tell you, the girlies did NOT lie about these $48 beauties! The quality and construction are surprisingly impressive for the price, and they look far more expensive than they actually are.

Vimisaoi Slouchy Boots (red stone) $48.00
And THAT is what I love about personal style. Sometimes the piece that makes the biggest statement doesn’t have to come with the biggest price tag. It’s all about knowing what you like, recognizing what works for your wardrobe, and having the confidence to wear it YOUR way.
How I Styled Them
For our final look, I wanted to have a little fun with some newer pieces I’ve recently added to my wardrobe while still incorporating those tried-and-true staples that never seem to fail me. I started with a pair of olive nylon wide-leg bermuda shorts featuring a peplum skirt detail at the waist. An interesting silhouette all on its own, so naturally, I had to play around with it!
I paired the shorts with an ivory graphic sweatshirt and layered a blue-and-white striped button-down underneath. Because if there’s one thing we’re going to do around here, it’s get some mileage out of our wardrobe essentials! The button-down adds a little structure and dimension to the outfit while keeping that relaxed, slightly oversized feel I love.

Sweatshirt (similar) || Button Down || Shorts || Boots || Bag
Now, here’s where the styling gets interesting. The graphic sweatshirt features burgundy collegiate lettering, which subtly picks up the rich burgundy color of my crocodile-effect slouch boots. It’s a small detail, but it helps tie everything together without making the outfit feel overly coordinated. And for my bag? You already know! I went right back in with my Louis Vuitton Speedy 30 because that bag stays employed around here.
The finished look is comfortable, playful, and a little unexpected. We’re mixing sporty pieces with statement footwear, experimenting with proportions, and combining newer finds with pieces that have been in my closet for years. And that’s exactly what I want you to take away from this entire boot shopping guide. You don’t have to reinvent your wardrobe every season. Sometimes all it takes is introducing one new piece and getting creative with what you already own.

Final Thoughts: Shop Smarter, Not Harder
At the end of the day, boot shopping doesn’t have to be complicated, and you certainly don’t need a closet overflowing with boots to have great personal style. The goal is to build a collection that makes sense for YOU, your lifestyle, your wardrobe, and your budget.
Whether you’re starting with a classic black boot, exploring different shades of brown and nude, or stepping outside your comfort zone with a fun animal print, remember that these are suggestions, not rules. You don’t have to buy everything at once, and you definitely don’t have to buy the exact styles I’ve shared. Take what works for you and leave the rest!
And before you check out, ask yourself one simple question: Can I style these boots with at least three things I already own? If the answer is yes, you might be onto something. If not, maybe they can stay in the cart a little longer.
Because shopping smarter isn’t about spending the least amount of money or avoiding the occasional splurge. It’s about making purchases that you’ll actually enjoy wearing.
Now go build that boot collection, one intentional purchase at a time. And most importantly, have FUN with it!
And if you want to see these boots in action, head over to my YouTube channel, where I’m breaking down all five pairs and showing you how I styled each one using pieces from my own wardrobe. Because sometimes you just need to SEE how it all comes together!
