If your idea of styling a flannel shirt starts and ends with jeans, sneakers, and a trucker hat, GWORL, we’ve got some exploring to do! This fall, we’re taking this familiar wardrobe staple beyond the usual with six outfit ideas, unexpected pairings, and a few clever styling hacks using TWO flannel shirts.

And remember those brown and nude boots from our Boot Shopping Made Easy guide? Oh, we’re wasting NO time putting those babies to work! Because the beauty of personal style isn’t always about adding more to your closet, sometimes it’s about reimagining what you’ve already got.

The Flannel Shirt Edit: Shop With Intention, Style With Imagination
Just like anything else I bring into my closet, a flannel shirt needs to make sense AND be of good quality. I knew I wanted something oversized, not just for the relaxed fit, but because having a little extra fabric gives me more room to experiment with different silhouettes and styling hacks. So naturally, my first stop was the men’s section at the thrift store, where I found two flannels that checked all my boxes and felt perfect for the fall season.
Now, when it comes to finding your own flannel shirt, the goal is to choose something that speaks to YOUR personal style. For me, I was drawn to a palette of browns, blues, and tans. My first find was a 100% cotton J.Crew flannel for about $4.50, and the second was a Wrangler flannel in beige with hints of red, burgundy, and navy blue also $4.50. Both are a men’s XL, which was intentional because all that extra fabric gives me a little more playground to, well… PLAY when it comes to styling!
I also paid attention to how the colors and patterns complemented each other. Even though these are two completely different flannels, I wanted them to mix and match effortlessly because you already KNOW there’s going to come a time when I’m wearing them together. That’s the beauty of shopping with intention. You’re not just thinking about how to wear a piece today, you’re considering all the possibilities waiting in your closet. And for a price tag of less than $10.00 I say we are winning here.
Look 1: The Double Flannel Effect
I recently came across a plaid shirt on SHEIN that essentially looked like two flannel shirts fused together. Cute concept, but instead of spending $45, I figured why not recreate the look with the two flannels I already thrifted? I started by wearing the brown flannel as usual, then completely buttoned up the beige flannel and tied it around my waist to create that layered, reconstructed effect without actually altering either shirt.

To keep the look cohesive, I paired the flannels with brown barrel pants, a brown LA baseball cap, and my trusty Louis Vuitton Speedy 30, carried as a clutch. And remember those brown Jeffrey Campbell Visionary boots from our boot shopping guide? Well, here they are making their first appearance! The mix of warm brown tones, oversized proportions, and contrasting plaid patterns gives this outfit a little more personality than your typical flannel and jeans combination.
The takeaway? Sometimes you don’t need to buy the statement piece. You just need to rethink how you’re wearing the pieces you already have.
Look 2: The Flannel Skirt Remix
Remember that styling hack we did a few articles back using two men’s button-down shirts to create a skirt? Well, GWORL, we’re bringing that one right back! This time, I buttoned my two oversized flannel shirts together to create a skirt, giving these thrifted finds yet another way to earn their place in my wardrobe. And if you’re wondering exactly how I pulled this off, you can catch this hack and all the others in action over on my YouTube channel!
For the outfit, I started with a white ribbed, long-sleeve boatneck top and layered my KBB by Kahlana carpenter denim jacket over it. The beige collar on the jacket ties in beautifully with the beige flannel in the skirt, making the whole combination feel intentional. I brought back those nude Amazon boots from our last boot shopping guide, added a thrifted nude woven bag, and finished everything off with my favorite khaki sunglasses.

The beauty of this look is how we’re taking two traditionally casual shirts and turning them into something completely unexpected. A little creativity, a few familiar wardrobe pieces, and suddenly those flannels have a whole new purpose!
Look 3: The High-Low Flannel
Who says sweatpants can’t have a little range? For this look, I pulled out my brown-toned J.Crew flannel and paired it with an older pair of barrel-leg sweatpants. Instead of wearing the flannel on its own, I layered it over a pullover hoodie for a relaxed, oversized silhouette. I added my shiny brown oversized Coach Brooklyn-inspired bag, brought back the brown LA baseball cap, and finished with my brown Tom Ford visor sunglasses.
Now, here’s where things get interesting because this outfit can go in two completely different directions depending on your footwear. For a laid-back, sporty look, I’d reach for my New Balance 574 YURT sneakers. But if you’re in the mood to play with a little juxtaposition, swap the sneakers for a pair of boots. I went with my brown Jeffrey Campbell Visionary boots, which add an unexpected contrast to the casual sweatpants and hoodie combination.

The styling lesson? Don’t be afraid to mix pieces that traditionally belong to different categories. Sometimes the most interesting outfits happen when you stop worrying about whether something is supposed to go together and start experimenting with how it makes you feel.
Look 4: The Flannel, Blouse
Now, who said a flannel shirt couldn’t be elegant? For this look, we’re taking that same oversized brown J.Crew flannel and giving it a completely different personality with a simple styling hack. I turned the shirt around, buttoned it up, folded down the collar, and cropped the front to create the look of a chic, structured blouse. Same shirt, entirely different silhouette!

Flannel || Skirt || Boots || Bag (similar)
To play up the more elevated feel, I paired my newly reimagined flannel with a statement khaki skirt I found on TikTok Shop, my brown Jeffrey Campbell Visionary boots, and a mini brown calf-hair trunk-style bag. The combination of the flannel’s plaid print, the statement skirt, and the rich textures of the accessories gives this outfit an interesting balance of feminine and rugged elements.
And that’s the beauty of experimenting with your wardrobe. A piece doesn’t have to stay in the category it was originally designed for. Sometimes all it takes is turning it around, quite literally, to discover an entirely new way to wear it.
Look 5: The Layered Peplum Play
For our final look, we’re giving the beige Wrangler flannel its moment in the spotlight! I went back to those Bershka jorts I featured in an earlier article and decided to experiment with volume and juxtaposition. By layering a navy blue KBB by Kahlana mini skirt over the shorts, I created a peplum-like effect that adds dimension and an unexpected twist to the silhouette.

For the top half, I left the flannel shirt open toward the bottom and layered it underneath a beige corset-style sweatshirt hoodie. I pulled the look together with a navy blue baseball cap, my nude Amazon boots from our Boot Shopping Made Easy guide, and my trusty Louis Vuitton Speedy 30. The mix of the oversized layers, contrasting lengths, and coordinating beige and navy tones gives this outfit a playful streetwear feel without sacrificing the creativity.
And there you have it! Six looks, two thrifted flannel shirts, and plenty of ways to rethink a familiar fall staple. The takeaway from this final outfit? Don’t be afraid to layer pieces in unexpected ways. Playing with length, volume, and proportion can help you create an entirely different look using items you already own.
Your Flannel, New Rules
And there you have it, Gworl Gang! Five looks, two thrifted flannel shirts, and a whole lot of proof that this fall staple has so much more potential than we sometimes give it credit for. From creating a skirt out of two button-downs to transforming a flannel into an entirely different silhouette, these looks are a reminder that personal style isn’t about having more clothes. It’s about learning to see the possibilities in the pieces you already own.
Now, if you’re ready to see these styling hacks come to life, head over to my YouTube channel,
where you can watch me put these looks together and see exactly how I pulled off each transformation. Because sometimes you need to SEE the vision before you can recreate it yourself!
And remember, these are ideas, not rules. Take what inspires you, experiment with what you have, and make each look your own. Your flannel doesn’t have to look like everybody else’s, and neither do you.
