Hey gworlie! Today, we’re talking about how to create super cute and affordable summer outfits by practicing the art of mixing thrifted pieces with closet staples. I’m going to show you 5 simple summer looks I created using a basic styling formula that you can use whether you’re thrifting, shopping intentionally, or simply trying to create more outfits with the pieces already hanging in your closet.
If you’re the girlie who wants to thrift but isn’t quite sure how to find pieces you’ll actually wear, or you’re looking for ways to refresh your summer wardrobe without doing a full-blown shopping haul, this post is for you.
Because here’s the thing: creating a stylish wardrobe isn’t always about buying more. Sometimes it’s about learning how to see the possibilities in the pieces you already have and knowing how to mix them together. Ultimately the goal is to pair pieces together so well, one would not be able to tell which is what. So before we jump into the outfits, let’s talk about the simple formula I use to create looks that feel intentional, effortless, and completely me.

The Art of Mixing: A 3 Step Formula To Create A Balanced Look
Step 1: Start With a Piece That Speaks to You
The first step to creating affordable summer outfits starts before you even leave the thrift store. When you’re walking through the aisles, don’t just search for something because it’s trendy or because it’s a good deal. Slow down and look for the piece that speaks to you.
This could be something bold and unexpected; a colorful printed skirt, a unique vintage blouse, a statement accessory- or it could be something simple and classic, like the perfect pair of denim, a linen shirt, or a basic tank with an amazing fit. The point is not that every thrift find has to be dramatic. The point is that the piece should feel like something you can see yourself wearing and styling.
Before you head to the checkout, this is where the intentional shopping comes in. Start thinking about what you already own. Ask yourself:
“What pieces in my closet can I pair with this?”
Can you immediately picture it with your favorite jeans? A pair of shorts? A button-down? Your go-to shoes? Your everyday accessories? Then comes my personal rule:
The 3-Way Test.
Before bringing a piece home, challenge yourself to style it at least three different ways. Can you wear it:
- casually?
- dressed up?
- with multiple pieces already in your wardrobe?
If you can’t think of at least three ways to wear it, it might be a sign to leave it behind. Because the goal isn’t to collect more clothes – the goal is to build a wardrobe that actually works for you. Buying pieces just because they’re cute in the moment can quickly lead to overconsumption and the never-ending cycle of “I have nothing to wear” while your closet is overflowing.
Intentional shopping changes the game. When every piece you bring home has a purpose, getting dressed becomes easier, more creative, and a lot more fun.
Step 2: Build Around Your Closet Staples
We are calling this article affordable summer outfits for a reason, here’s why. Now that you’ve found a piece that speaks to you, it’s time to bring it home and connect it with what you already own. This is where intentional shopping really starts to make sense. Before you even think about buying something new, ask yourself:
“What pieces do I already have that can bring this thrifted find to life?”
Your closet staples are the foundation that helps your thrifted pieces feel wearable and effortless. These are the wardrobe essentials we’ve talked about before- the pieces that consistently work, season after season, and give your more unique finds a place to shine.
For example, if you find an amazing thrifted top, start thinking about the bottoms already hanging in your closet.
Could you style it with:
- your favorite pair of jeans?
- a denim skirt?
- cargo shorts?
- tailored trousers?
- a simple pair of shorts?
If you find a cute summer tank, don’t immediately think you need another purchase to complete the outfit. Look around your closet and ask what you already have that could create the foundation. This is the easiest way to start mixing thrifted finds with your existing wardrobe. But if you’re feeling a little more creative… this is where the fun begins. Don’t be afraid to create a little contrast.
Try pairing pieces that don’t traditionally seem like they belong together but somehow just work:
- feminine pieces with sporty elements
- oversized pieces with fitted silhouettes
- casual pieces with something more elevated
- vintage finds with modern staples
Those unexpected combinations are where personal style is born. Honestly, some of my favorite outfits happen when I’m just playing around in my closet, moving pieces around, trying different combinations, and waiting for that moment when everything clicks.
Sometimes you don’t find your style- you create it through experimenting.
Style Takeaway: Closet staples become interesting when you style them with intention.
Step 3: Add Your Personal Style Twist
Now that you have your thrifted piece and your closet staples working together, this is where the magic happens. This is the moment where an outfit goes from “I own some cute pieces” to “I know how to make my pieces communicate with each other.”
The finishing touches are what bring the entire look together. This is where you add the details that make the outfit feel personal and intentional:
- a statement handbag
- the perfect pair of shoes
- a bold scarf
- a baseball cap
- layered jewelry
- a jacket for dimension
- a pop of color that catches the eye
Think of accessories as the lines connecting the dots. They help every piece in your outfit make sense together. Maybe your outfit needs a little contrast. Add a shoe in an unexpected color. Maybe the look feels too simple. Add a statement bag or a piece of jewelry that changes the entire energy. Maybe the weather calls for another layer. Throw on a jacket that creates a completely different silhouette.
These little decisions are where your personal style starts to show up. Because style isn’t always about having the most expensive pieces or owning every new trend. It’s about knowing how to take what you have and create a look that feels like you. And if you don’t remember anything else from today, remember this:
The outfit is always about the details.
The details are what turn individual pieces into a style story. Now that we got the hard stuff out of the way, let’s have fun and create a few of these said affordable summer outfits.
Look 1: The Pink Sundress Moment
Let’s start with a piece that immediately caught my eye: this soft pink striped sundress I found for only $6.99.
The moment I saw this dress, I knew it was coming home with me. There was something about the feminine details that made it feel like the perfect summer piece. I loved the way it cinches and gathers at the waist, creating a flattering fitted silhouette before flowing into a more relaxed, flared bottom.

And can we talk about the little details? The tie detail around the bust gives this dress just the right amount of summer romance and effortless appeal without feeling like it’s trying too hard. Plus… it has pockets. Y’all already know I’m a sucker for a good pocket. 😂
Because this dress is already a complete outfit on its own, we can semi skip over Step 2 of the formula as far as clothing is concerned. However, the staple used here is a beige baseball cap and some pearl neckalces I had laying around. From there we went straight into adding the personal style twist.
The goal here was to keep the look soft, feminine, and effortless while adding details that made it feel elevated and completely me.
I paired the dress with:
- a beige baseball cap for a casual, sporty contrast
- a cream luxury crossbody bag and pearls to bring in a subtle elevated touch
- my Nike x Jacquemus Moon Shoes to add an unexpected streetwear element
To finish everything off, I layered several pearl necklaces to bring in more personality and add that extra feminine detail. This is the beauty of mixing. The foundation of this outfit was a $6.99 thrifted dress, but the styling choices transformed it into something that feels intentional, elevated, and uniquely mine.
Soft summer colors, feminine details, sporty touches, and a little bit of luxury prove that affordable pieces can still create a look that feels expensive.
Recreate The Look:
- Sundress
- Baseball Cap
- Sneakers of choice
- Statement Bag
- Jewelry of choice
Style Tip: Don’t focus on recreating the exact outfit. Focus on recreating the formula. Mix one feminine piece with sporty accessories and a few elevated details to make the look your own.
The Formula
Thrifted Find: Pink sundress
Closet Staples: Baseball cap + layered pearls
Style Twist: Luxury crossbody + low-profile sneakers
Style Takeaway #1: A great dress doesn’t need much- let the accessories tell the story.
Look 2: Never Underestimate the Basics
This outfit actually started with two thrifted finds instead of one: a cropped striped mock neck top with an elastic waist ($6.00) and a pair of khaki cargo shorts ($6.99).
While I found each piece separately, once I got home and started playing around in my closet, I realized they were made for each other. What I love most about these finds is that neither piece is over-the-top. They’re both simple basics that can easily become closet staples- not just for summer, but for seasons to come. And that’s exactly why they spoke to me. I could immediately picture multiple ways to wear them, which meant they passed my 3-Way Test with ease.

From there, it was all about adding my personal style twist.
I leaned into a casual street-style vibe by throwing on a denim bucket hat and an old pair of New Balance dad sneakers. To elevate the look, I added a mini Gucci crossbody bag for a touch of luxury and finished everything off with a pair of rounded khaki sunglasses that tied the entire color palette together.
It’s proof that even the most basic pieces can create a standout outfit when you style them with intention.
Recreate The Look:
- Cropped stripe top
- Cargo shorts
- Sneakers of choice
- Statement Bag
- Bucket hat
The Formula
Thrifted Finds: Cropped striped mock neck top + khaki cargo shorts
Closet Staples: Dad sneakers + bucket hat
Style Twist: Mini Gucci crossbody + rounded sunglasses
Style Takeaway #2: Closet staples become interesting when you style them with intention.
Look 3: A Pop of Color Changes Everything
If there’s one thing I’m going to grab almost every time, it’s a bold pop of color—and these hot pink tailored shorts ($6.00) had my name written all over them.
The first thing that caught my attention was the quality. They’re well made, have just the right amount of stretch, and fit like they were tailored for me. That’s always a win when you’re thrifting.
The second reason they came home with me? The color.

I know bold pieces can feel intimidating, but I’ve always looked at them a little differently. Instead of asking, “What am I going to wear with these?” I immediately started thinking about what I already owned.
My mind instantly went to the collection of blue and white striped button-down shirts hanging in my closet. I grabbed a thrifted men’s button-down, tied it at the waist, and suddenly the outfit came together without buying a single extra clothing piece.
To finish the look, I reached for one of my forever wardrobe staples—my Louis Vuitton Speedy 30. It’s one of those bags that works with just about everything and proves why investing in timeless accessories can make getting dressed so much easier.
Then came the fun part.
Instead of playing it safe, I mixed prints by pairing the striped shirt with my cow-print Sambas, and a printed pink scarf. It adds more than enough personality without taking away from the bold color of the shorts. A pair of white sunglasses pulled everything together, creating a look that’s colorful, playful, and effortlessly comfortable.
Sometimes the boldest piece in your outfit ends up being the easiest one to style.
Recreate The Look:
- Blue and white striped button down
- Bold color shorts
- Animal print sneakers
- All around handbag
- Sunglasses
The Formula
Thrifted Find: Hot pink tailored shorts
Closet Staples: Blue and white striped button-down + Louis Vuitton Speedy 30
Style Twist: Cow-print Sambas + white sunglasses
Style Takeaway #3: Don’t be afraid of color. A strong wardrobe foundation makes bold pieces easy to wear.
Look 4: Basic… But Make It Fun
At first glance, this looked like a basic white tank top ($8.00), but one little detail completely changed my mind.
The two extra-long ties immediately caught my attention because they transformed this piece from a simple tank into something with personality. I knew right away they would give me different styling options, and that’s exactly the kind of versatility I look for when I’m thrifting.
Instead of leaving the ties as they were, I created a side sash effect that instantly made the top feel more like a blouse than a basic tank.

To build the outfit, I paired it with one of my newest wardrobe staples: a pair of khaki barrel-leg trousers. The structured silhouette balanced the softness of the top while creating a polished foundation.
For my personal style twist, I leaned into soft pink accents throughout the look. I added my Jacquemus x Nike sneakers, tied a vintage silk floral scarf around my neck, slipped on a pair of blush pink sunglasses, and carried the cutest thrifted pink furry bag that I scored for just $3.99.
This look is the perfect reminder that style isn’t always about buying bold pieces. Sometimes all it takes is a thoughtful detail, a fun accessory, and a little creativity to turn the basics into something memorable.
Because when you know how to accessorize, even the simplest outfit can make a statement.
Recreate The Look:
- Sleeveless top
- Khaki Trousers
- Low Profile Sneakers
- Head Scarf
- Sunglasses
- Statement Bag
The Formula
Thrifted Finds: White tie-front tank + pink furry bag
Closet Staples: Khaki barrel-leg trousers
Style Twist: Jacquemus x Nike sneakers + vintage silk floral scarf + pink sunglasses
Style Takeaway #4: The smallest details often make the biggest style statement.
Look 5: The More You Add, The Better It Gets
Sometimes the best outfits happen when thrifted pieces find each other.
This colorful fitted V-neck blouse ($3.99) immediately spoke to me because of its beautiful mix of colors—white, soft pink, yellow, and lime green. It was playful, versatile, and full of styling possibilities.
The moment I picked it up, I already knew exactly what I wanted to pair it with: a cream flared skirt that I had thrifted on a previous shopping trip.

See what happened there?
Instead of wondering what I needed to buy, my mind immediately went to something I already owned.
That’s The Art of Mixing.
To bring even more personality to the outfit, I layered on a lime green J.Crew bouclé jacket—another thrifted treasure that pulled the lime green from the blouse beautifully. Then I reached for my cream YSL crossbody bag with gold hardware to add a polished touch before finishing everything off with my favorite Jacquemus x Nike sneakers. (At this point, I think it’s safe to say these sneakers have officially become one of my wardrobe staples.)
To complete the look, I added the same white rounded sunglasses from Look 3, proving that accessories deserve just as much wear as the clothes themselves. The finished outfit feels colorful, polished, a little preppy, and still completely at home in my street-style lane.
And my favorite part?
Nearly every fabric in this outfit was thrifted. That’s the beauty of intentional shopping. The longer you practice mixing, the more your wardrobe starts working together- and getting dressed becomes less about buying more and more about seeing more.
Recreate The Look:
- Sleeveless top
- Mini skirt
- Low Profile Sneakers
- Blazer
- Sunglasses
- Statement Bag
The Formula
Thrifted Finds: Multicolor V-neck blouse + cream flared skirt + lime green bouclé blazer
Closet Staples: White rounded sunglasses
Style Twist: Cream YSL crossbody + Jacquemus x Nike sneakers
Style Takeaway #5: The best outfits aren’t built in one shopping trip; they’re built over time by collecting pieces that work beautifully together.
Affordable Summer Outfits Start With Intention, Not a Shopping Haul
If there’s one thing I hope you take away from today’s looks, it’s that creating affordable summer outfits has very little to do with buying more clothes and everything to do with learning how to style the ones you already have.
Whether you’re thrifting for a statement piece, building around your closet staples, or adding those finishing touches that make an outfit feel like you, every look is an opportunity to practice The Art of Mixing.
The goal was never to recreate my outfits piece for piece. My hope is that you’ll take the formula, make it your own, and start looking at your closet a little differently. You might be surprised by how many outfits are already waiting for you—you just haven’t mixed them together yet.
Remember…
Find the piece that speaks to you.
Build around your closet staples.
Finish with your personal style twist.
That’s it. That’s the formula. Now, if you’d like to see these affordable summer outfits come to life, I’ve filmed every look so you can watch the styling process from start to finish over on YouTube.
