A Short Guide: Shopping For Luxury Perfumes
Before we get to the 4 luxury perfumes I highly recommend, I want to share a few tips for a newbie starting a collection. Of course there are tons of things that can be added, but these are the basics.
1. Always Sample A New Scent Before Committing
All scents are not created equal, nor do they perform the same. Unless you’re purchasing something you know is an absolute hit for you (or gifting); try a sample first and / or smell it in person. The main reason, you need to know what you’re getting yourself into. Does it smell GOOD!?!
Don’t Take Anyone’s Word For It
I personally feel I have great taste when it comes to scents. However, this is my opinion. Even with my picks today, still try before you buy. I never take an ‘influencer’s’ word for it. I get recommendations from people whom I respect. But you better believe I find a department store that hosts it. If you live in an area where this is not an option, reach out to the maker directly and inquire if they offer samples. Most do, for a fee.
Purchasing luxury perfumes is an investment. Be sure it’s something you actually like before breaking out the big bucks. PLEASE.
When Gifting Perfume To Someone
In the case of gifting perfume to someone else, I at least have an idea of what it smells like before giving it. Purchasing a fragrance for someone is intimate, you know what this person is into. Pick a scent that goes with their personality. If choosing a fragrance as a last minute gift and you can’t smell it first… don’t get it.
2. Play It Safe
As you progress through your perfume journey, you will understand there are truly levels when it comes to buying luxury scents. Season, body chemistry, and bottle size all play a factor when it comes to investing in a fragrance.
If you have not reached that milestone of having a perfume collection, I highly advise you to play it safe. Please remember this is your smell and money on the line, lol. This is the one time i’m actually making this statement. Keep reading for more details on what playing it safe means…
3. Get A scent You Can Wear All Year Long.
Its a little known fact, only certain scents come off the shelf seasonally. However, there are certain scents you can wear all year round. You can discover this through simple research. Google the scent and simple ask if it’s a year round scent. Sometimes the actual perfumers website gives this info. You can also visit a department store’s perfume section and ask the perfume consultant. They generally have knowledge of what fragrances fall into this category.
When starting a collection, the goal is to find scents that you can get the most use out of. I would not advise you to do this with a heavy robust seasonal scent.
For example: I can only tolerate heavy masculine scents during the cooler months. Let’s take Baccarat Rouge 540, this is NOT my scent in the summer. I gives musty, lol. I say all that to say I would not start a scent collection with this scent. It’s too expensive and unique to have as an only option.
Luckily, today’s luxury perfumes all fall into the “all year” category.
4. Choose Scents That Work With Your Body Chemistry
Although a perfumer makes a scent to smell a certain way, once it hits your skin it becomes custom to you. I really don’t know the science behind this, how something smells on me can smell completely different on you. Of course the scent has the same essence but the full effect varies on your body chemistry and how the notes react. (Hence my Baccarat 540 experience) Keep it safe and stick with more neutral scents. Today’s picks qualify.. maybe. lol
5. This Is Your Money, Honey You Ain’t Got S**t to prove.
Anytime I am spending dollars on a scent, I’m going to go with a smaller size should it be an option. Meaning, if the brand offers a .50ml versus a .100ml, I’m going with the .50ml. I consider this a trial period with the luxury scent to determine if i truly like it.
Okay, you’ve posted a 400.00 bottle of Bond No. 9, but do you really like it or is it for the gram? 10 times out of 10.. if you see me post a smaller bottle it’s because its being decided upon to be a part of my ‘stay’ collection. I even purchase the small roll on options from Sephora if i’m really not sure. The size I chose determines the confidence I have in a scent. Trust me, I’ve had my days of buying large bottles of luxury scents, only to still have them sitting in my collection simply because I don’t use them or care for them. Don’t be me. Buy what you’re 100% comfortable with and what’s within your budget.
5. Find Your ‘Tribe’
There are millions of scents out there. The goal is to figure out your range. For example I am in no way shape or form accepting of sugary sweet scents. I know this from experience so I stay away. Figure out what pallets float your boat and dive in there. unfortunately this can only be discovered with trial and error. Trust me there are tons variety in every category. You won’t be looked at as the girl (or guy) that always smells the same.
6. Price Does Not Matter
Just because it’s expensive does not make it viable. I’ve smelled some pretty funky scents that range in the $400+ price range. Brand does not matter either. Go with what you enjoy, don’t get caught up on brands and price.
7. Determine What Stays In Your Collection
Once you begin experimenting with luxury scents you will be drawn to your faves. These are going to be considered your ‘stays’.. meaning what stays in your collection. There will be scents that you will find you can’t live without. Once the bottle is nearing it’s end you will make a dash to replenish it, lol trust me.
Of course, these are all suggestions do with them as you wish. I am no perfume connoisseur whatsoever, I’m just telling you my process and what has worked for me. Let’s get on to the fun part, the scents. Keep scrolling, my picks are next.
