Byredo iconic scents (By-Ray-Dough)- I sampled them, and here’s why. I am an absolute lust for fragrances.
That being said, I’m always on the hunt for a good scent to well, sniff out and add to my arsenal. If you’re on an aromatic journey, allow me to be your guide.

More than a a few people have raved about the Byredo brand via IG so I figured I would give it a try. I will be honest, I’m the opposite of “in the know” about this brand. Byredo has been around since 2006 and I had no idea. Its’ safe to say, I’m now entangled. One of the most noted scents was “Gypsy Rose” and “Mohave Ghost.” Mohave Ghost has been summed up to be “That One”, so I definitely needed to know what the hype is about. Unfortunately, I was not able to locate this brand in a department store near me to do a sampling; so I slid to the lovely internet to see what I could see.
How Much We Talkin’?
I reached out and asked if they have free samples (LMFAO, yeah I did). To which they quickly replied… yeah um no. However, they offer a “Discovery Set” which can be purchased. To my excitement they offer a 6 vial sampler set of their most popular scents, price tag $USD 45. I chose this one versus other specifically because it offered the “Mohave Ghost” and “Gypsy Water” which are the main two I was dying to smell. Of course this set was sold out… so, I patiently waited. 3 weeks. I received the “Ayo, we have your stuff in stock” notification and put in the order.
Wrapped With a Bow
Shipping was relatively fast, it came within 7 days or so. The first thing that’s to be noted was the packaging of this sample set. I can completely understand why you are paying for this. It’s very obvious they are a brand of luxury and style. The boxing is impressive. Simple minimalistic white box, top with a bold B logo and finished with “BYREDO” engraved on the side, white wrapping secured with a printer white sticker, and chic crinkles. They without a doubt care about customer appeal.
Inside as promised you get 6x2ML sample bottles
Absolutely that one. Its truly a unique scent. I just don’t have anything like this in my collection. It smells fresh yet airy with a very subtle hint of sweetness. Very earthy. I feels like a pretty day in the desert. I took several takes of this on paper, I just couldn’t stop smelling it over and over again. Intoxicating. Now, on my skin… wow. I will wear this here and there, I will wear this everywhere.
For me, it’s a no. This is more of a woody and a hint of pine. It’s more faint and very lightweight. Almost non existent. It too is very unique. It was this way on paper, and on my skin. Underwhelming. I tried it on fresh out the shower and laid around the house a bit. It’s just a no. For me (these are my opinions, because ya’ll like to fight lol)
Rose of No Man’s Land
Actually has a story (I love stories behind brands). “Rose of No Man’s Land is the nickname given by soldiers to the nurses who saved thousands of lives during WWI. The scent is tribute to selflessness and compassion”. With top notes of pink pepper and Turkish rose petals and a white amber base; this one is very earthy, yet subtly delightful. This rose is not my scent. I would not choose this one over Gypsy Water if I had to choose one of the two.
A favorite of the bunch. It’s almost the duplicate of what Scent of Peace is to the Bond No. 9 brand. Intensely fresh, light, and will make a wonderful spring and summer scent. No wonder as the heart notes are Peony and Violet. This is a happy scent. I would love to wear this to bed and smell this in my sleep.
On paper, this one didn’t get much of my attention. I sprayed it on my skin, yummy! Its’ very much leaning toward more of the masculine side, smoky with a little musk. Not overpowering at all. I would want to smell my man’s neck and this be on it. Whew. It smells like leather. This makes sense because “leather” is a base ingredient. I definitely see myself adding this one to my vault for my Autumn and Winter rotations. Bibliotheque comes before Blanche in this scenario.
Soooo good! OMG. Just like Bibliotheque, I wasn’t impressed with the paper sampling. Now, mixing it with my skin’s chemistry… *rolls eyes in bliss*. This one leans toward the masculine side. However, its a true unisex scent. This smells like grown up baby powder (sorry i’m terrible with describing). It’s noted as “With a focus on beauty and fantasy, Bal D’Afrique is Ben Gorham’s ‘love letter’ to Africa.” Woody, smoky, yet elegant. This is a YES.
Which one is getting copped?
I won’t lie these scents drive a tough bargain. They are the epitome of what lavish and grown up smells like. Mojave Ghost was my immediate decision. Bibliotheque came really close to first place.
Byredo is a pricier brand starting at $USD 190 for their 1.7 oz sized bottles. However, after you’ve spent $USD 45 on a discovery set, you’re emailed a unique voucher code within 14 days. It’s a one time use to get $45 off your first scent if purchased within 4 weeks of ordering your sampler set. Very great incentive make a decision quick.
My order of preference
- Mojave Ghost
- Bal D’Afrique
- Gypsy Water
- Rose of No Man’s Land
If you’re sincerely into fragrance, It’s really not a hard decision to make. You need these in your life. There is enough variety in this set to please any scent palette. I completely forgot to mention this is a unisex brand (+points). This sampler set is not only affordable but it truly gives you a look into what the Byredo brand is all about. Give it a try and see.
Have you tried the Byredo line? Which is your favorite? If not, are you going to try the discovery set?
